E-liquid

Have you ever put any thought into how you store your e-liquid? If you’ve been thinking about buying some vape juice in bulk – maybe because your favorite vape shop is having a great sale, for instance – it’s time to think about it. Vape juice isn’t perishable in the same way that food is, but that doesn’t mean it lasts forever. The ingredients in e-liquid are volatile, and they will slowly change over time with exposure to the environment.

So, does vape juice expire? Although there isn’t necessarily a specific date on which a bottle of e-liquid is no longer safe to use, you will definitely find that the experience of using an old bottle of vape juice differs significantly from the experience of using a new one. Reading this article, you’re going to learn how e-liquid changes over time and how you should store it in order to make it last as long as it possibly can. First, though, let’s answer the question that brought you here: How long does vape juice last?

How Long Does Vape Juice Last?

In general, you can expect a bottle of e-liquid to give you a great vaping experience for up to about one year from the date of manufacture. The fact that vape juice degrades over time, though, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll taste bad or that it won’t be safe to use after you’ve stored it for a year. It simply means that the e-liquid will be noticeably different from when it was new. We’ll talk about the differences in greater detail shortly.

It’s common for e-liquid makers to put “best by” dates on their products. If you have a bottle of vape juice with a date on the label, you should make a note of it and try to use the e-liquid by that date. If you happen to buy a bottle of e-liquid without a date, it’s a good idea to write the date of purchase on the bottle when you receive it. Writing the date on the bottle will help you remember to use it within a year.

When we say that a bottle of e-liquid will deliver peak vaping quality for up to a year, we’re assuming that the bottle was made under true factory-grade sanitary conditions and with pharmaceutical-quality ingredients. The vast majority of e-liquids fall into this category. They’re made under impeccably clean conditions and contain only the purest ingredients.

There are two types of e-liquid, however, that may not have quite the same shelf life as one made under factory conditions.

  • Small-batch e-liquid that’s made to order by a local vape shop may not have the same level of sanitation as a product made under factory conditions with true hands-free automation.
  • E-liquid that contains a botanical extract for flavor – such as a tobacco extract – may have minute particles that encourage oxidation to occur more rapidly.

Most e-liquids are made under factory conditions, and most of them use concentrated natural and artificial flavors rather than botanical extracts. Therefore, vape juice generally doesn’t fall into either of the above categories and will have a long shelf life.

What is E-liquid Made From?

Our eLiquids usually contain the below ingredients:

  • Vegetable Glycerine (VG) – a base ingredient of all e-liquids. It’s a colourless, odourless substance that helps to give the vape its pleasant, sweet flavour.
  • Propylene Glycol (PG) – another base ingredient that’s clear and almost odourless. It has little taste of its own, but acts as a carrier for the e-liquid’s specific flavourings.
  • Nicotine – a substance that occurs naturally in several species of plant, including the tobacco plant. Products such as e-liquids that contain nicotine but involve no burning of tobacco are likely to emit far fewer and lower levels of toxicants compared to conventional cigarettes.
  • Flavourings – these ingredients give the vapour its distinct flavour.

Why Is It Important to Know How Long Vape Juice Lasts?

It’s important to understand when vape juice expires because you may eventually encounter a situation in which it makes sense for you to buy e-liquid in bulk. Let’s suppose, for instance, that your favorite vape shop has a massive sale on a particular brand of e-liquid because the brand is going out of business. A major e-liquid sale can also happen when a manufacturer decides to change a product’s packaging or ingredients, making it necessary to clear out the old stock as quickly as possible.

It’s also good to know how long vape juice lasts if you’re interested in making DIY e-liquid. The most affordable way to buy e-liquid ingredients is to order them in bulk. Whether you’re storing large volumes of commercial e-liquid or your own DIY vape juice ingredients, it’s wise to have a plan to ensure that you’ll use your stock while it still tastes as good as it can.

Even if you don’t buy vape juice in bulk and generally just buy a bottle or two of e-liquid at a time, it’s still good to have an understanding of how long vape juice lasts because you want to know whether the products you’re buying are fresh or close to their expiration dates. You wouldn’t want to pay full price for a bottle of e-liquid that’s already close to a year old.

Does Vape Juice Go Bad?

Does Vape Juice Go Bad?Vape juice does go bad eventually. As we mentioned above, though, it’s not as though a bottle automatically self-destructs a year after the date of manufacture. The process by which a bottle of vape juice ages and degrades is actually more gradual than that. If you’re very familiar with the way a given e-liquid flavor tastes, you may notice a difference in the e-liquid after just a few months of storage.

The reason why a manufacturer typically gives vape juice a shelf life of one year is because after that, the product will no longer meet the maker’s quality standards. At that point, the e-liquid will have degraded to the point at which it won’t be as enjoyable to use as it was when it was fresh.

What Happens as Vape Juice Ages?

In storage, e-liquid begins to degrade as its chemical compounds interact with light and air. Nicotine begins to oxidize and turn yellow. Flavor compounds interact with one another. If the e-liquid is stored in a plastic bottle, the ingredients may interact with the plastic as well. When a bottle of vape juice is very old, you’ll notice three key changes.

  • The e-liquid will change in color. Some e-liquids turn yellow, and others turn brown. The extent of the color change depends on the e-liquid’s ingredients and nicotine content.
  • The nicotine will lose its potency. Nicotine is volatile, and it degrades over time. That’s one reason why people who make DIY e-liquid will often store the nicotine in their freezers; it helps to slow the degradation process. Even under the best possible storage conditions, though, the nicotine content of a year-old bottle of e-liquid will be lower than the nicotine content of a fresh bottle. The change, however, probably won’t be drastic; you’ll probably just need to vape a little more to compensate.
  • The flavor of the e-liquid will change as the flavor compounds meld and interact with one another. Some people actually enjoy storing their vape juice for a little while before using it. They call the process e-liquid steeping, and they enjoy the way in which an e-liquid’s flavor begins to mellow after it’s been in storage for a while. After a long period of storage, though, you’ll probably find that an e-liquid’s flavor has degraded to the point where it no longer tastes like much of anything. You’ll still detect a sort of non-specific sweetness or fruitiness, but the individual flavor notes will largely be lost.

How to Tell if E-liquid is out of Date

As with any other consumable product, there will be some tell-tale signs that your vape juice has expired and shouldn’t be used. These include:

Change in smell

E-liquid should have a pleasant and enjoyable smell both before and after it’s vapourised. If your e-liquid is off, you may notice an unusual change in smell – one that’s unpleasant.

Separation

Over time, it’s perfectly normal for the ingredients within e-liquid to separate. In most cases, a quick shake should be enough to fix the problem. But if that doesn’t do the trick and ingredients remain separated, this suggests your e-liquid has expired.

Discolouration

Changes in colour are another immediate indicator that something’s not right with your e-liquid. Shaking may solve the problem, but if it doesn’t, it’s best not to use a pod that appears an unusual or unexpected colour.

How to Store Vape Juice Properly

How to Store Vape Juice Properly

The primary factors that cause e-liquid to go bad are heat, light, and air. Air causes an e-liquid’s ingredients to oxidize, and heat and light further exacerbate the situation by causing those interactions to happen more rapidly. Keeping a bottle of e-liquid at its peak for as long as possible, therefore, means that you’ll need to minimize its exposure to those three things.

You can do that by following three very simple steps.

Away from Direct Sunlight

Bright sunlight can cause unusual temperature changes to your e-liquid, which encourage ingredients to break down. Keep your pods in a dark cupboard or drawer, and never on windowsills or in cars.

Away from Heat

Warm air will shorten the lifespan of natural ingredients contained within the e-liquid. Pods are always best stored somewhere cool where temperatures are unlikely to top 25°C.

In Airtight Conditions

Keeping your e-liquid sealed until it’s ready to use is vital in keeping it fresh. Ensure any pod or cartridge lids stay securely tightened, so air cannot seep into the bottle.

As we mentioned above, some people prefer to store commercial vape juice or DIY e-liquid ingredients in the refrigerator or freezer. Keeping e-liquid very cold slows the process of degradation and may allow you to store your vape juice for a long time with little discernable change in quality. You should only consider storing your vape juice in the refrigerator or freezer, however, if there are no children in your house.
