Vaping and Pets, Things to Consider!

Below we will take a look at 5 things you should keep in mind when vaping around your pets to help keep those tails wagging and become a ‘pawsome’ vaper!

Over 3 million people vape in the UK, and it has now become one of the first things that people think about when they want to quit smoking. Many vapers are also proud pet owners, however just because vaping is a healthier alternative to smoking, this doesn’t mean that we should neglect to consider our furry friends.

1 – Some Pets Have Allergies

Perhaps one of the most important things to note when vaping around pets is potential allergies. Cats in particular can have pronounced allergies to PG[1] found within most e-liquids. Whilst each animal is different, it would be best not to exhale any of your vapour in the direction of your friendly feline. Dogs and other animals are not generally affected, however it would still be best trying to avoid exhaling directly in front of them unnecessarily.

2 – Keep Rooms Well Ventilated

One of the best things you can do to be considerate to pets and people around you is to make sure that any room you are vaping in is kept well ventilated at all times. Vapour is quite heavy and usually drops to the floor when present in large quantities. Because pets often lie on the floor, having a door, window or vent open will ensure that any excess vapour will dissipate, leaving you to vape and your pets free to catnap wherever they please.

If you can’t open the window or need to keep the door closed, a standard desktop fan would be able to keep the air circulating, dispersing any vapour that would otherwise build up.

3 – Keep E-liquid Out Of Reach

It’s easy to leave a bottle of e-liquid out on the side after refilling our tanks up, however it can be even easier for our four-legged friends to get hold of a bottle that has been left in plain sight. If an animal pierces a bottle containing nicotine with their teeth whilst playing, this could cause serious health problems for your pet.

To prevent any accidents occurring, always keep your e-liquid in a zipped pocket, cupboard or drawer.

4 – Charge Your Batteries Away From Pets

This one applies to all vapers, but particularly those who use e-cig mods. If an external charger is being used, ensure that this is never left alone with your pet. Dogs may accidentally swallow an e-cig battery which would not only result in an emergency trip to the vets, but cause undue stress to both you and your furry friend, not to mention the implications and dangers involved in attempting to remove the battery.

5 – Your Pet Will Tell You If There Is Something Wrong

We all know when our pets are happy, whether it be a gentle purr or a wagging tail. If vaping in front of your pets presents any issues for them, you are sure to be able to notice any first signs of discomfort and take steps to prevent these problems from progressing any further. As long as you always ensure the environment your extended family member has is the very best you can provide, then you can rest easy and just carry on vaping.

It is worth noting that unlike vaping, smoking cigarettes in the same room as your pet can cause severe long term damage to their respiratory system. Vaping has been studied to be at least 95% safer than smoking, a statistic which should always offer a degree of reassurance, to both us and our pet’s long term futures.
